A few years ago I was asked to participate in an alumnae portrait project celebrating the 50th anniversary of women at HBS. The assignment was to write a piece about what you do and photograph yourself with a sheet bearing a one-word description of why you do it. This was my photo entry. (Thanks, Tim Leavitt, for the great pic.)
Will Bachman, co-founder of the independent consultant community Umbrex, is asking similar questions of a handful of community-members in his new podcast, Unleashed, interviewing a different guest in each episode. I’m Episode 3. Check it out at
In 38 short minutes, you will learn:
- Why art history majors make great management consultants (a.k.a. my debt of gratitude to BCG)
- A strategist’s perspective on brand (It’s more than just a logo)
- Why the world needs brand consultants (Empathy! Intimacy! Storytelling!)
- What exactly I get paid to do (Mom, does this answer your question?)
- How I sell (I don’t, really)
- What motivates me (in one word or less)
- My p.o.v. on extracurricular activities (they’re important)
- How to brand yourself (no, it doesn’t hurt)
- What my imaginary highway billboard would say (hint: my website says it too)
- What I look for when buying a mousetrap (“kills mice dead” does the trick – I don’t need to know the compression, extension and torsion specs of the trap spring)
I am at peace with the possibility that only my mother will listen all the way till the end. But for sure check out Unleashed - there are loads of interesting people featured in other episodes… Kudos to Will and happy listening!
